Plastic bags: the battle of the sexes!

thumb_green_living.jpgIs there a battle of the sexes when it comes to recycling?

Let me put it another way, do you faithfully haul your jute and organic reusable cotton shopping bags to the supermarket every time you go to pick up your groceries while your (male) partner somehow always 'forgets' and has to use the supermarket carrier bags?

It's a tale I've heard over and over again from my female friends - women mostly try their best to remember to reuse their canvas bags while blokes are content to pollute the planet with disposable plastic ones!

Determined to get to the bottom of it, I've asked around and the consensus among my male friends seem to be that bringing a canvas tote with you to the supermarket is somehow considered unmanly and a bit girly! One solution, surely, could be that manufacturers should start making reusable bags for blokes. It's an untapped market and a whole new marketing opportunity!

Instead of 'Plastic Ain't My Bag' and 'I'm Not a Plastic Bag' cotton options, you could have bags with graphics of monster trucks or an explanation of the offside rule: that would make the Alpha males happy! The only problem with the reusable bag phenomenon is that now, instead of a cupboard full of plastic bags, I now have a stack of cotton shoppers! (although, I admit that I still use some plastic bags for putting kitchen rubbish into the bin, I still have to figure a way around that, though I do try to use supermarkets that offer bags made from mostly recycled plastic).

My favourite cotton shoppers come from Dogeared (a gorgeous Californian brand more famous for their hip jewellery and gifts) that I picked up in New York. One of them bears the slogan Karma - What Goes Around Comes Around while the other says Your Plastic Bag Can Kiss My Canvas. Which, I think, sums the whole reusable bag issue up perfectly (and is about as ass-kickingly Alpha male as you can get!).

Bye for now,
