Paul Meekin's Top Tips for Wedding Guest Chic

Partners-hatBy Paul Meekin

The weather may have taken a turn for the worse, but at Partners we’re always feeling sunny, especially when there are weddings to prepare for.

Last month I talked about bridal hair and in particular, how to recreate the styles of three of this year’s most famous brides, Kate Middleton, Kate Moss and Zara Phillips.  This month Sugahfix has a bit of a wedding theme going on, so in honour of the gals I’m going to talk about the needs of the rest of the wedding party.

Let’s face it, when you get a wedding invite, the first thing you think is ‘what am I going to wear?’ And with that anxiety comes hair anxiety too.  My main piece of advice is - don’t compete with the bride- it’s her day, so let her sparkle.  Wedding guests should look great too of course - especially considering that the photos will be around for years to come, so you’ll want to look your best- but all eyes should be on the bride.

Partners-bunHat-wearing female guests should bring their head-piece along to their salon in advance, so your hairdresser can work on a style that will suit both the occasion and the head gear.  But aside from big society weddings we don’t find that many women these days wear hats, and especially not younger women. So we’d recommend either a loose bun or a side plait.

The loose, deconstructed bun has been the hit of the season so far - it works with everything, from vintage to formal, and can soften up a fitted dress, making the overall look less severe.  We’ll start by blow-drying the hair, using volumising product (Your Highness from TIGI works best) and a bit of backcombing before putting the hair up in a top, back or side bun, allowing strands to fall down around the neck and on the other side of your hair, for a soft and sexy look.

A deconstructed bun on the side of the head looks great - don’t worry about looking like Princess Leia with one of her buns missing - this is altogether more fashion-forward and fabulous! Scarlett Johansson, Ugly Betty’s Becki Newton and Miley Cyrus have all rocked this look on the red carpet.

Another old-skool style - and indeed, old school girl style - is the side plait.  But, as with the bun, this has been given a messy makeover, and now oozes a crazysexycool vibe. Uber-cool gals including Fearne Cotton, Nicole Richie and Kate Bosworth have all sported this look and it works really well with a special dress because it shows you care about your appearance but aren’t trying too hard.

Partners-weddingguestThe fishtail plait is especially popular, and since it has been seen on both Cheryl Cole and Tulisa N-Dubz on primetime TV, we can certainly say that this hair style has got the X Factor.

Then of course there’s the sleek and sophisticated pony tail starting high on the back of the head, but this is one look that should never be messy - think groomed elegance rather than ‘just got out of bed’ untidiness.

What else we’re loving this month:

Popstars at the Park (Avenue Hotel), on 10 September. Dress as your favourite popstar and you could help to save a life! There'll be a host of celebs, divas, pop stars and rock legends descending on Belfast's Park Avenue hotel on Saturday for a very special charity fund-raising fancy dress event. Raising much-needed money for the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast as well as lymphoma and leukaemia research, there’ll be music from DJ Robert Brown plus dancing, ballot prizes, karaoke and a prize for the best fancy dress. These charities are close to my heart so please come along and support us. Tickets cost £20 each from Partners Hair & Beauty on 02890 455444.

Our bridal packages - we’ve got several of them and you can opt for a simple waxing package (leg, bikini line and underarm, plus an eyebrow wax and tint and eyelash tint) or go for the ultimate in pampering with our Deluxe Pre-Wedding Package which includes a facial, a body exfoliation, massage, manicure and pedicure.
