Get Hair Ready for Christmas

Katy-Perry-MTVBy Paul Meekin

Wow, I'm still reeling from the fabulous looks seen at the MTV EMAs in Belfast. We opened Partners the day of the awards to cope with the volume of clients who were going to the bash later that evening, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The whole planet now knows that Belfast is up there with the best in the world when it comes to putting on a party and showcasing our beautiful city.

I was keeping an eye out to see what hair shades the celebs would be sporting, because quick colour changes have really been the big trend of 2011. Kylie, for one, looks ten years younger now she has swapped her blonde locks for a deliciously rich chocolate brown tone.

I've loved the DIY dip-dye look in particular, and this will be a strong trend coming into the Christmas party season. Even 'conventional' celebs such as Glee's Dianna Agron have been experimenting with colour - pink, her case. It was a look she had for her Glee character, but she kept it in real life and was seen out and about in West Hollywood with her washed-out pink 'do'.

The DIY hair look is also part of grunge revival - not least because it's now 20 years since Nirvana released their classic album Nevermind. Texture Kylie-brown-hair-2and messy bed-hair hair are hot with a younger generation who were too young to enjoy the look the first time around, with random streaks of colour (especially pinks, blues and greens) and backcombing. It's a dishevelled, rock 'n' roll look that celebrates movement for the ultimate rock chick image.

Fiery flaming redheads will be in vogue in the run-up to Christmas, but not the pop reds of last season - summer's over and so is that look! Bitter chocolate brunettes and warm bronzy gold blondes are the hot colours for autumn/winter with an emphasis on a glossy finish and precisely placed colours that enhance cut, texture and shape.

I've been loving the vintage look all year but this Christmas I predict an explosion of retro styles at the various Christmas parties that will be taking place. Katy Perry really rocks this look, with her pink victory rolls and long, silver screen-style waves. To get the vintage look you really have to prep your hair well - freshly-washed clean hair is too soft to hold this style - I apply Bed Head Sugar Dust to give hair the right amount of texture and root lift.

The ballerina bun is a really versatile style and will go with everything from a little black dress to a va-va-voom sequinned gown. To work this look, I backcomb the hair then tie it into a ponytail and pin it into a bun high on the crown. For a more structured bun, plait the hair before twisting it or use a hair donut - we sell them at Partners - and finish with TIGI Masterpiece spray.

Of course, wearing your hair down is one of the easiest - and I think sexiest - looks around and always will be. As long as your hair displays lots of bounce and body that is. I'd recommend curling your hair with a TIGI Hairwand in alternate directions, then running your fingers through it to mess it up for an edgy finish. With short hair, add texture to your locks with a spray such TIGI's new Sugar Shock, for a funky, edgy look.

After that, you'll be ready to rock the Christmas party scene - so move over MTV, Belfast gals are where it's at!

What else we're loving this month:

Our new range of TIGI products - the Bed Head Sugar Dust, an invisible micro-texture root powder, is fab. Sprinkle it into your roots to absorb oil and provide you with mega-lift. We also love applying it through layers to give additional texture.

Movember - just as October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, November (renamed Movember in honour of the moustache-growing that is the symbol of the campaign) is now dedicated to raising money and awareness for men's health, especially prostate cancer. Get the bloke in your life to grow a 'tache and show his support!

Maxi dresses - the girls in the salon loved their summer maxis and are delighted that the trend is still going strong in A/W, in heavier fabrics and richer, darker colours such as purple and berry shades. It's all very 1970s and Abigail's Party!

New releases - just in time for Christmas gift lists, there are new albums by Florence + the Machine, Snow Patrol, Olly Murs, Cher Lloyd and even Susan Boyle. Loving it!
