Our new beauty columnist Angela Morgan from Ms Morgans Beauty Emporium has been speaking to Q Radio’s Cate Conway, who took time out of her busy schedule, rushing from her early morning breakfast show to talk to me about her beauty secrets.
Cate (42) looks great and always has a natural and healthy glow, and I was dying to find out what her secrets were.
Can you tell me a little bit about your skincare regime?
“Well, when you say regime, it sounds as if I have a process, it’s not very good. I use No. 7 makeup wipes, which they tell you not to use anymore. I also sometimes use the No.7 Melting Gel. Ciara Daly put me onto that; she also gave me the fluffy mitt to use with it. I also use a night cream, I’m using La Roche-Posay, and in the morning, and I use Kiehl’s face wash and L’Occitane moisturiser, the one with the navy jar and the silver lid, and sometime I would use a Clinique eye gel.
That’s about it but I would rarely use a toner, but I drink an awful lot of water, it’s ridiculous! About 3-4 litres of water a day, and I have never smoked and I drink a lot less than I used to, I think it has been kind to me, as my skin is quite good. The only thing I have a problem with is dark circles around my eyes, but that probably has something to do with the 4am starts”.
What would be your 3 go-to products?
“If I had to have just three, I would have to have my Kiehl’s moisturiser. I would have to have mascara, I use Soap and Glory. I have tried everything from Chanel to Benefit and they just smear all over my face. I have always gone back to the Soap and Gory one, it’s about £8 but I have found it to be the best. I would have to have a lip liner that I also use as a lipstick, but I love Carmex. I put on my lip liner and then use Carmex over the top. It reminds me of being a teenager. I remember when I was 14, my friend from school would go to America every summer and bring Carmex back, and we thought it was amazing. It wasn’t available here and I remember having a Carmex stick and thinking it was brilliant.
What tip would you give to stay looking youthful?
“Aw jeepers! Don’t get up at 4am every morning. Water is a big thing, I think it’s the cure for everything; I just drink loads and loads and loads of it. And apart from that I would say smiling, it sounds so cliché, but I think when you look happy you look so much better.
Have you ever tried any alternative therapies?
“I have resisted Botox, the only thing I have tried is micro-needling, which I liked, but I think the thing I get most compliments about when people say ‘Oh my goodness! you’re looking really well today!’ is spray tan. It’s the healthy glow. I have been so against spray tans for about 20 years because it was so hard to get right. I now get the Insanity Tan and it would definitely be what most people would notice.
If you could have any treatment in the world and money was no object what would you have?
“I think I would have a more holistic treatment, I think it would have something to do with the sea, I’m obsessed with the sea, maybe some sort relaxation retreat, doing yoga and having a massage on the beach in Bali or Thailand.
I would definitely not be interested in getting all these Kim Kardashian bum implants and things, it just turns me, they just don’t look human, it’s just not real. These images are just flooding social media. When we were younger we may have been exposed to these images maybe 8 times a day, kids now see them every 8 seconds on Instagram, and they need to know that it’s not real. I try to be a realistic version of myself.
Obviously, I’m not exactly the same person I am on the radio, but it’s hard to hide as Stephen Clements constantly points out my massive hands, my hairy hands, ‘hairy handed moon face’ is what I often get called!”.
I love that Cate has a very natural look with great skin and complexion. The fact that she can see her assets and does not cover them up is a great thing. Sometimes less is definitely more, and with Cate, this is, without doubt, the case.
Nothing you wear is more important than your smile!
