Sugahfix got to stay here recently and loved every moment of our three-night retreat – from the bouncy sunken trampoline outside (not just for kids!) to the wood-burning stove in the living room of our cottage, the three-bedroom Hillcrest.
We loved cosying up on the sofa watching DVDs of an evening, while feeding logs into the stove in this all-mod-cons retreat. But the location is also great for those who want to experience the outdoors too, whether that’s hiking, fishing or cycling (although our idea of an outdoor adventure is more like shopping in nearby Hillsborough and Lisburn). There’s even a fully-equipped games room attached to the cottages, with a pool table and table tennis, for when the Northern Irish weather lets you down.
Best of all, the whole enterprise has first-rate green credentials. Owner Glenn Harvey first got bitten by the eco-bug when he lived in Canada and on his return to Northern Ireland he made it his mission to incorporate some of those ideals into his holiday cottage venture.
The solar panels, triple glazing and wood-burning stove keep the whole house toasty while the veg garden outside offers free seasonal pick-your-own treats. Added to that, a rainwater recycling system collects water from the roof that is then used in the toilets, washing machines, and outside taps.
But these houses are anything but rustic – they’re freshly decorated in a chic, modern style; come with contemporary kitchens and beautiful bedrooms (with flat screen TVs), and offer free wi-fi, which proves that eco-chic can be cutting-edge too.
We stayed in Hillcrest, which boasts one twin and two double bedrooms – the two bedrooms upstairs are both en suite while the downstairs double room has its own bathroom.
The other cottage, the two-bedroom Croob View, sleeps up to six people in two double bedrooms – there’s a downstairs bedroom fitted with a super-king bed and an upstairs room with double and bunk beds plus its own en-suite (ideal for kids).
Prices are from £425pw/£99 daily rate for Croob View and from £475pw/£99 daily for Hillcrest.
