The Stuff Teenage Dreams Are Made Of

Katy Perry's California Dreams tour arrived in Belfast yesterday (24th October) for one night only- and it was definitely a night to remember.

From the Smooch Cam and #BelfastDreams tweet screen in the pre-Katy build up- to the blown-up pictures of fans' nights out, inside fireworks and the foam and confetti sprayed over us all during her final song- Katy took the audience with her as she travelled through Candyfornia- and we loved the ride!

The theme running throughout the concert was of dreams- yummy ones with cupcakes and candy, and horrible ones of a scary butcher with lots of over-sized steaks and sausages hanging from the roof. Crazy? Yes- we were allowed to enter into the wacky world of Katy Perry's mind for almost two and a half hours- and it was fabulously freaky!

The concert was suitably risqué for the sometimes-controversial Perry- with a hallucination scene depicting the effects of a hash brownie, a 'drunk and slutty' friend joining her on stage, and various sexual innuendos involving a boy she dragged on stage (who was loving it!) and her song 'Peacock'. But unlike the notorious Rhianna, her show was more sugar coated sex than X-rated- Katy knows her fans inside out and she played a blinder matching the fun and flirty content to the audience of everyone from pre-teens to yummy mummys.

Katy Perry is not a dancer, she's a singer- and she does it exceptionally well. She held her own with the backing dancers and her steady and forceful voice throughout was enough to distract from her lack of dancing- the gal knows how to put on a show.

A consummate professional- Perry didn't even flicker when her mic stopped working and had to be replaced mid-song by a stage-hand. The fact that she was dancing with mimes at the time was more than ironic- and almost made it look like the lack of sound was deliberate!

From Teenage Dreams, Ur So Gay (and you don't even like boys) and I Kissed a Girl through to E.T, Not Like the Movies and a mash-up of The One That Got Away and Adele's Someone Like You, the California Dreams concert told a story not just of teenage heartbreak and fairytales- but of Katy Perry's journey into Pop Legend.

Katy achieved something special at the Belfast leg of her European tour- she made the audience feel like the performance was unique and just for us Norn' Iron' fans. Gone were the generic 'You're the best crowd yet' statements- and in their place were well placed jokes about our country and funny references to her questionable Irish heritage (through her ginger roots). Whether her friend Rhianna had given her some advice following her week-long stay in Belfast or she had just done her research, the girl got it right.

A night spent at a Katy Perry concert will have you feeling like you've woken up in Vegas the next morning- but it's oh so worth it.
