We've got the footwear to fulfil not only this year's passion for retro school accessories, but also to usurp the ubiquitous ballet pump.

Mulberry has made geek chic sexy again, thanks to its uber hip Alexa satchel, named after the too-cool-for-school Ms Chung.

And we reckon the humble guttie - the simple black slip-on gym shoe beloved of our primary school days - is set to do for footwear what the Alexa has done for handbags.

Last year we dipped our toe - pardon the pun - into the fashion field with prim and proper white lace-up pumps teamed with pretty floral dresses.

But this year gutties (so-called because the rubber soles are made from the sap of the tropical gutta-percha tree) get full marks from us.

We spotted both male and female scenesters wearing them on the streets of Leeds and picked up a pair for ourselves on a city break shopping spree there earlier this week.

But eagle-eyed Sugahfix gal Carol Smyth has spotted them closer to home, in Warnocks, the Belfast schoolwear suppliers - go to the top of the class Ms Smyth!

Black or white, with jeans or a floral playsuit, we'll be rocking this trend all summer.
