Ok lads, we are now properly in winter mode but that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice dressing well to compensate for the guaranteed cold and rain.
With the office Christmas party, family gatherings, drinks after work, Christmas day and New Years Eve all crammed into the next few weeks, you need to have some fresh new gear to see you through until 2018.
Just because it’s Christmas, this does not give you an excuse to buy a terrible novelty jumper This will not make you original or memorable as pretty much every other guy out in the town will probably had the same idea.
If you’re not heading out for dinner and it’s just going to be drinks, music and food in the office, make an effort. Don’t loosen your tie (or worse, wear a Christmas tie) in an attempt to look relaxed. Bring a quick change so you are prepared should you get a better offer after the party and head into town.
Someone suggests drinks but you’re in the last trousers that were clean and your frumpiest outdoor coat. Sack that!
Keeping a bag under your desk with a pair of dark denim jeans, toiletries and a change of shoes. You know when the Christmas party is going to be so have a spare shirt ironed and ready. Hang it up in the cloakroom – do not even think of keeping it in your gym bag!
Christmas Day & Family Gatherings
The temptation lies in staying in your PJs all day, grazing on turkey, cocktail sausages, Quality Street until dinner. By then, you think, I might as well just stay in them… WRONG.
While it’s true this day is all about comfort; comfort does not mean sloppy. You’re probably going to be eating a lot more this season so forgo the skinny fit shirts and invest in a timeless smart sweater.
You can layer it up if you decide to venture out to walk off a few of the calories after dinner (even if it is just down to the pub)
I’m saying this now. If you have a black going out shirt, you need to read this. You are not a presenter on The Grand Tour or Match of the Day. Do not take fashion inspiration from mid-life crises.
If you are booked somewhere fancy, make the most of it. Make a statement, show your other half how well you can scrub up and make them proud to be seen with you. A bold blazer or trousers, keeping the rest of your outfit classic and subtle is a guaranteed hit.
If you’re going to a house party, be the most stylish one there. Clothes that fit well are always the most stylish so shop around. Being a medium in one store doesn’t mean you are in all of them. Get to know your build and what shapes, cuts and colours work on you.
If New Year is all about fresh starts, make improving or refining your personal style one of your goals.
