It’s all too easy for us to slip into a rut of being “a mummy”. Whether you’re a full time mum at home, working mum, or a mix, it can be so easy to allow ourselves to get out of the routine of looking after the thing that matters most (after our little ones of course) – OURSELVES.
Why oh why do we let this happen? Baby is born and we’re all left with that dreaded “mummy tummy”. We tell ourselves, “I’ll join the gym tomorrow”, “but she’s only 6months old- I’ve still got time”, “I’m just too tired to do anything outside of parenting duties”. Hands up, we’re all guilty of it.
But here’s the thing ladies, you need to look after No.1 sometimes. Imagine the aeroplane crash scenario- we have it drilled into us on every flight that we MUST put on our own oxygen mask before helping our children- what good are we to the kids if we pass out from lack of oxygen?! In the same way, what good are we to our kids if we constantly look after them but let our own health slip in the process.
Being a good mother, doesn’t mean being an unhealthy, unfit, exhausted mother! Having a healthy, strong body is what’s best for you and for your children!
Coming from a single mother who currently runs two businesses singlehandedly (believe me it’s a struggle but I cope), here’s some tips on how you can keep up good health and fitness whilst juggling motherhood. There’s no time like the present, start your Yummy Mummy regime today!
Get out of the house! Little one still young, in the pram/ buggy? Pop on your trainers and take them out for a speedy stroll! Forget the slow paced mosey down to the shop. Go to a park, wrap up warm and go for a power walk round a nice path! The fresh air and sunlight will do you both good, and baby will enjoy the ride around in the pram, seeing all the bright colours of the surrounding trees, flowers and animals. Do this at least twice a week and you’ll notice a real improvement in your physical and mental health!
In warmer months if there’s good weather bring a blanket and some toys, let the little one have a crawl around whilst you practice some jumping jacks and squats in front of them! (They’ll take delight in watching mummy jumping around like a mad woman!)
In the house, let’s work those tummy’s! Lying down flat on your back, knees bent, hold your little one up, suck in those tummy muscles and pull yourself up to sitting position with a straight back, kiss your little one! Lower yourself back down flat on the floor and repeat! Begin with two sets of 10 and build up to 3 sets when you feel your core muscles getting stronger. “Kiss- ups” will tighten mummy-tummy’s and help you engage with your little one! For a peachy bum and toned thighs, why not try some squats whilst holding your little one. The added weight will really strengthen your bum muscles, and again you won’t be missing out on mummy and baby time!
Wake up early– The sound of the alarm sends shudders down everyone’s spine, but trust me it’ll be worth it. Does your child have a regular wake up time? Set your alarm for 30mins earlier and get out of bed to do an morning work out in the house! Pop on your fave tunes, tackle some jumping jacks, running on the spot, burpees, sit ups, squats and press-ups! A full body workout in 30mins in the comfort of your own home! You’ll feel like a total boss once you complete this, ready to take on the day!
Got School-kids? Or do you work full time and rush home straight after work? Why not join me in Aurora Studios where I teach 30minute workouts everyday 12.15-12.45pm and 1.15-1.45pm! Ladies there are so many ways to keep yourself fit and healthy, whilst also being a mum. Yes it can seem impossible at times and lack of sleep makes you feel exhausted, but working out and eating right will help your tackle fatigue and keep you energised. You’re little one’s will thank you for it when you’ve got the stamina to keep up with them, and you’ll thank yourself when you’re feeling kick-ass confident! Wear the title Yummy Mummy, and wear it with pride! You’re a Queen!
