The mother of 7 didn’t have the most auspicious start in business. In fact, it was being made redundant that pushed her to trying out different ways to earn some money.
Shocked to lose a job only six months after starting, Sinead had also just recently gone through the stress of moving homes and getting her kids settled into their new schools.
But undeterred and not one to rest on her laurels, Sinead needed to find a quick way to keep money coming in.
The resourceful mum struck on ironing and immediately got a banner made up offering home ironing which she stuck on the front fence of her home in order to drum up business.
“Within the first week I had over 30 clients and steadily built up my client roster over the next year.
“It was hard work in that first year but I knew it would pay off and it did with the opening of Swift Cleaning and Ironing Services in Moneymore in 2006.”
“That’s when I realised that there was definitely a gap in the market for our service. But I didn’t just want to be working with events companies, I wanted to deal directly with hotels.”
Having set her sights on this goal, Sinead and her team made steady progress targeting hotels.
“A year later we were contracted to 13 local hotels and we gave up our laundry and ironing service to open our services directly to brides.
We still use our professional laundry equipment, but now we launder our own stock and over the last 6 years, we have supplied and dressed over 1300 weddings and events.”
Swift Services now provides room décor for weddings and events; specialty linen, chair covers, Chiavari chairs, table centerpieces as well as backdrops, draping, dancefloors and furniture.
Designed to bring working mums together every month, the group is about sharing tips and advice on carving out a successful career or business, all while juggling the responsibilities of being a mum.
“I understand how busy life can be with work and kids. But I also know how important it is to take the time to find help and advice on how to build your business and market yourself.
I’ve started this group with the aim of helping any Mum who aspires to have a challenging, stimulating and fulfilling work career whilst having the freedom and flexibility to be with their family.
Along the way I learned the importance of market research and ensuring there actually is a demand for the service or product you want to sell. But I’m still learning and will always listen to advice from others.”
The group will meet on a 6 week basis and also has a thriving Facebook group, where members can share resources to succeed together.
