From trend forecasting and designing quick turnaround fashion that hits the high street in a matter to weeks to her true passion for creating unique occasion and bridalwear in her North Belfast studio for individual clients – Mary Rose McGrath talks to Sugahfix about her career and plans for future.
“I think to be a successful designer, you have to be totally tuned into what the customer wants and to understand her needs – I almost have to put myself in their shoes“
“I like to design clothes for me – what I would like to wear. Sometimes girly, sometimes quite ladylike but always chic – all designs have to have added attention to detail which makes them different.”
“Having 15 years of design under my belt, most of it spent in London, has meant that I have designed for all areas in womanswear – occasionwear, denim, casual, tailoring, outerwear – you name it and I have done it!!”
“My point of different to other designers is that I am involved in the two extremes of fashion – the mass production high street side (designing and trend forecasting) to the total opposite end of hand made, exclusive, one-offs created using the best fabrics and finishes. I am the only designer in Ireland (as far as I am aware) who works in this way. I love it!”
“Both elements of my work mesh well together – I love to design for the masses, and get equally as much pleasure designing a couture gown for a very special event.”
“High street design means that there is so much fast fashion – the race is on to produce the must-have looks in the fastest time possible. I know, because I am one of the girls designing these trend pieces! It can be as fast as 3 weeks from sketch to on the shelves in hundreds of stores….
The trend forecasting ties in so well too – who wouldn’t want to take the time looking at each and every international designer’s new collection each fashion season?!”
“I am currently working on a third element in my designs – I have had too many requests recently about the availability of a ready-to-wear range to ignore. Therefore, I am working on a diffusion line to MaryRose McGrath – it will be called MR by MaryRose McGrath, and is currently at the sampling stage.
“The range will encompass a gorgeous collection of seperates – dresses, skirts and possibly little princess coats to sit with – I’m having so much fun working on this one!
“There are some extra specially exciting things planned for later on in the year, but these are top secret – am ridiculously excited with all the possibilities!!”
