Introducing Polly McKay! An incredibly talented makeup and prosthetics artist who has worked on The Hobbit, Dr Who, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Game of Thrones and makes actors look extraordinary for the big screen (just check out her imdb!). The Aussie artist also turns her creative skills to whipping up the most extraordinarily scrumptious Vegan food. Having worked with her on set and devoured the recipes below I just had to share her story with you. Enjoy!
“I’m Polly McKay! A professional makeup artist turned vegan cook! I’ve always been interested in cooking and I’ve always been a real ‘foody’. I come from a family where everyone cooks. We all work in different fields and have very different lifestyles but the one thing that binds us is our enthusiasm to talk about food, cookbooks and compare and share recipes-‘food is love made edible’ as they say!’.
However it wasn’t until I decided to change my diet and lifestyle to plant based 3 years ago that I really started to spend a lot of time researching and creating in the kitchen. Being vegan just means getting creative and thinking outside the box! I often find myself lying awake at night concocting recipes in my head. Cooking was a hobby though. It was something I was doing for myself and just sharing my ideas and food photos with the vegan tribe on instagram.
It wasn’t too long though before people started to ask me where they could ‘buy’ my food!? Friends and contacts were suddenly asking me to make dairy free cakes for their kids or a dinner for a vegan friend who was visiting and suddenly…I was in business! ‘Polly’s Vegan Bounty‘ is still in it’s infancy as I learn to juggle my career and this sideline but it’s more popular then I could have imagined!
For me, a plant based diet is a healthier, more ethical and sustainable, environmentally friendly way of life and that has become really important to me. I love being able to share my food with people and show everyone that ‘vegan’ doesn’t mean a diet of celery and carrot sticks! haha!
You can find my treats being sold in the cafe in Studio Souk in Belfast city centre or contact me through my facebook business page to have things made to order!”
