Fashion design has been Shauna’s calling for as long as she can remember, “I have always wanted to be a designer, my mum used to go nuts when she realised I had drawn dresses all over her encyclopaedias!
“My creativity developed through GCSE and A-level art and I really enjoyed garment construction, which encouraged me to learn more. I got a sewing job with a company making bespoke Irish dance costumes and bridal wear and learned so much from the hands on experience. I spent my spare time practising different methods of creating garments and from there, began making bits and pieces for myself and for customers.”
Shauna then undertook a foundation diploma in art at Newry Institute of Further and Higher Education before studying Fashion Management at Belfast Metropolitan College. It was through this course that she was offered a placement with designer Mary Rose McGrath, “I loved the placement and learned a lot about the fashion industry while I was there.”
Shauna’s designs focus on celebrating the female form in all its curvy glory. “My biggest inspiration has always been Dior, I love clean lines and clothing that accentuates the figure.
I’m also fascinated by corsetry and embroidery, and I try to incorporate structure and design into my garments to ensure a good fit and a fabulous feeling too!”
Shauna recently showcased some of her stunning designs at the Newry Style City fashion show at Bellinis. “I was delighted to be even considered as I am only starting out with my own designs and they haven’t been in many shows. It was excellent exposure and I really enjoyed it! Collaborating with milliner Marianna O’Reilly on a piece to open the show was fantastic- seeing the finished product on the night was amazing.
Shauna’s current dress collection is a homage to the traditional cocktail dress, “I wanted to add a modern twist to the cocktail dress, keeping it simple and elegant in shapes that flatter the figure.
“I’m currently working on some softer dresses in pale pinks and nudes, inspired by some beautiful printed chiffon I came across. Finding the time is proving difficult however!”
