Sugahfix Style Up Mom Jeans

By Andrea McVeigh @worldinaglass · On April 16, 2014

When I first wrote about New Look’s Mom jeans which feature in its new denim collection along with the expected Skinny, Super Skinny and High Rise styles, it stirred debate in Sugahfix’s comments sections. Especially when we pondered whether Mom jeans should, in fact, be renamed Mammy jeans in Northern Ireland!

Would it be easy to take to high-waisted, bum-hugging denims after a decade of slouching around in boyfriend jeans or striding out in skinnies?  There’s only one way to find out, so when New Look kindly sent me a pair of its Mom jeans in a mid-wash shade (it also comes in acid wash, white and a darker blue), I was pleased to find out that, for a start, the size 12 fitted me well.  I have a problem with jeans, the bane of my life – I’m narrow in the waist but big in the thigh so jeans shopping usually involves much sweating and struggling in changing rooms and at least four different sizes, in eight different styles, with no purchases to show at the end of it all.

So far, so good, but what to style them with? The Mom option (a nice blouse, perhaps from one of the First Lady’s favourite stores, such as J. Crew) was out. The jeans are in, but you only need to take the look so far.  I went with a hat-tip to Kate Moss and worked it with a tucked-in black-and-white stripy tee (every woman should have one in her wardrobe) and a skinny fit back blazer, as well as the hot shoes of the moment, a pair of Birkenstock’s Madrid sandals in Blue Lagoon (a heads-up – I’m usually a size 40, but in Birkenstocks I take a size 39 so try before you buy).

The verdict – the jeans do an amazing job of holding in your tummy (result!), and, I think, worked well with the blazer and tee.  I’ll definitely be wearing them on Saturday shopping expeditions, trips to the market and on holiday.  What do you think and how would you wear them?
