International Women's Day
Tuesday, 08 March 2011 16:47

womensdayBy Andrea McVeigh.

From Emmeline Pankhurst (leader of the British suffragette movement, which helped women win the right to vote) to Lady GaGa, who kicks ass as one of the strongest, most unapologetic women in pop, we're celebrating 100 years of International Women's Day at Sugahfix and marking the achievements and struggles of women all over the world.

Whether it's your mum, or a female politician, writer, pop star, artist, or even yourself, today is the day to celebrate all the female role models in your life.
We're enjoing a week of activities, kicking off with today's events in the Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens.

If you're near the museum, pop in to see the crafts of 1911 brought to life with wool spinning, patchwork and dressmaking demonstrations and Belfast's fabulous Belle Hoppers providing music and dance from the heyday of the dancehalls.

On Thursday the QFT's (www.queensfilmtheatre.com <http://www.queensfilmtheatre.com> ) From Here to Eternity film night  features the documentary Hanna's House and the film As If I Am Not There, which tells the moving story of a young woman from Sarajevo who finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time in 1992.

On Friday, Dawn Purvis MLA will be talking about her work with women from Afghanistan to mark the launch of a suffrage mural on the corner of the Shankill Road and North Howard Street, organised by the Shankill Women's Centre.

And in association with FemFest, club night Eclektric presents Women's Radio this Friday in Belfast's Pavilion bar.

There'll be a smorgasbord of female-only tunes on a musical journey from the Shirelles to Shirley, The Bangles to Blondie, Dusty to Diana and Madonna to MIA, after which the club night itself kicks off (www.facebook.com/eclektric ).
