While the entire MTV EMA circus seemed to roll into town on the back of a lorry- caterers and all- the organisers managed a nod or two to local talent. EMA stylists visited a few Belfast shops and boutiques to bring a Northern Irish edge to the occasion.

As well as dressing BBC Newsline's Natasha Sayee and UTV's Alison Flemming in stunning gowns for the event, fabulous Belfast-based designer Una Rodden was specially commissioned to make a bespoke wrap-around man skirt for Jared Leto, of 30 Seconds to Mars. While they were at her shop on Arthur Street, stylists also took a Catherine B necklace which was worn by Selena Gomez at the press conference (pictured left) and with her first outfit at the awards, and a dress by a French label which Selena wore during one of the sketches on the night.

Brand new local boutique Proof, 1B Jameson Street (off the Ormeau Road) also got a visit and stylists filled five bags full of clothes and accessories from the pop-up shop. Two gorgeous pendants by milliner and Proof owner Grainne Maher were worn by host Selena Gomez during the ceremony, "It was such a thrill to have the MTV wardrobe team visit the shop and they were so enthusiastic about the designs," said Grainne. "They took a wide selection of items from dresses by Bridgeen Graham, Riona Treacy, Ruedi Maguire and Kerry Brogan to accessories by Rachel McKnight. We didn't know what was going to appear on stage – if anything! So it's such a huge thrill that the MTV EMAs have supported a local Belfast designer."

DavidGuettaCakeJohn McClean of the Sugar Room was the third Sugahpal to get a phone call from the powers that be at MTV- and they had an unusual request for the cake designer, "I got a phone call last Wednesday from EMI Records in London checking that it would be possible to get a cake at short notice for one of their artists performing at the MTV EMAs. Even though I was booked up, I jumped at the chance. In a second phone call, I was told it was for David Guetta and that they wanted something big, OTT and with a WOW factor. They basically gave me carte blanche to create what I wanted but the only stipulation was that it all had to be edible and include his new album artwork. I came up with the concept of mirror balls, headphones and all of his album covers and to make the whole cake sparkle.

"Originally I was supposed to bring the cake toMTV-Selena-PD the Odyssey for 6pm and deliver to him in his dressing room, but due to security, traffic access and rehearsals, I had to bring it earlier and so I missed him, which was a bit disappointing. The guy from EMI records was blown away when he saw it and promised to get a few pictures of David with the cake. Katie Larmour told me that she was backstage during the awards and that the cake was on full display for all the stars in the Greenroom and that Jason Derulo had a big slice and loved it! It was a great opportunity for me and it just goes to show that it's not only the major players in fashion, beauty and the music industry that benefit from these events, but that little known businesses like The Sugar Room can benefit too, I was well chuffed!"

We are so proud and happy that the likes of Selena Gomez's stylist were able to appreciate the fashion talent here in Belfast- although we're not surprised at all. We can also vouch for how yummy and more-ish all the Sugar Room delights are- no wonder Jason Derulo ate a big slice of David Guetta's birthday cake- no-one can help themselves around John's creations!

What we love the most is that us Belfast gals can now dress like the stars and eat like them, just by popping into Proof Boutique, Una Rodden and The Sugar Room- what a perfect excuse to go shopping!
