This week has been very relaxing. For the 4th of July Celebrations, we spent two days at Oxnard Shores and watched an amazing firework display over the harbour.
It's a stunning community with beautiful beach homes on the ocean front. If you are a keen surfer or just a beach bunny, this is the place to be. Being a coastal town, Oxnard enjoys year round excellent weather. It really is the cutest town, from wooden shacks to stunning glass fronted homes.
It was great to see everyone bbqing on their front deck and having all the neighbours around while kids play on the beach. Such a great way to spend the 4th of July.
Also this week, I caught up with 22 year old Zach Winnington from Ballymena who is working at Camp Stevens in Julian, San Diego. Zach has taken a summer University break where he is studying Retail Management in Edinburgh.
Camp Stevens provides a welcoming home for retreats, education and adventure. This summer, Zach is a team leader to 8-15 year olds from diverse backgrounds. They have all sorts of activities for the kids from archery, swimming, hiking, camping and gardening. He told me it's a lot of hard work but he loves it.
The campers sleep under the stars in the 256 acres of woodland and they make their own meals from the organic garden and cook around the camp fire. They have a large orchard with apples, pears, peaches and plums, so they never get hungry.
Zach got bitten by a spider while on camp but that was his worst moment, trying to get to the nearest hospital 2 hours away but thankfully, he's ok. Zach applied for the job through Camp America and believes that it is an inspiring experience and very enriching in a number of ways.
Now, if you love golf and have a few spare pennies in the bank, you should go to The Rivera Golf Club. Opened in 1927, it served as the venue for Championship Golf in Southern California.
It produced many champions, such as Fred Couples, Johnny Miller and Ben Hogan. I know nothing about golf but even I know this is one of the best courses in the world. It costs a staggering $350,000 to join, that is before the monthly fee and quarterly clubhouse spending money!!!
If you don't have that sort of money lying around it makes a beautiful setting for a dinner date. Ladies, if you are thinking of getting married abroad, this is a beautiful place to have a wedding.
Watching the E! Channel, I noticed many celebs wearing the "SAME SKY" bracelet, which I found in a store in Abbot Kinney. SameSky is a company that employs HIV+ women, all of whom are survivors of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.
The women have been trained to crochet and make bracelets using unique hand blown beads. They are given a marketable skill and consistent employment. The two essential factors needed to rebuild their lives and those of their families. Check out www.samesky.com prices start at $160.
Over 300,000 people live in the Hollywood area but how come I keep bumping into the same people all the time. After seeing the "pants man" last week, now I see him everywhere I go, wearing the same American flag pants but now I also keep seeing Darius Daresh. Do you remember him from appearing on the British talent competition PopStars? He also won the recent Popstar to Operastar show - was he ever really a popstar?!! Anyway he has recently got engaged to movie star Natasha Henstridge. He is everywhere I go from Rodeo Drive to standing in Costco looking for multi vitamins. I wonder were we will meet again this week?!
