Firstly, well done to Derry-Londonderry for winning the title of UK City of Culture 2013. I was glued to my laptop to find out. It's very exciting news.
Like most Sugah gals I love a sugar fix and Jelly Belly Beans are my favourite. Browsing through a gift shop to get out of the mid-day sun, I noticed a colourful wall display. On closer inspection it was 50 tubes full of every flavour of Jelly Beans. Heaven! The birth of the worlds most famous Jelly bean was born in Los Angeles, just next door to Hollywood. A Los Angeles candy distributor had an idea for a jelly bean made with natural flavourings. Creating "true-to-life" flavours with natural ingredients for flavouring whenever possible. In 1976 the first eight Jelly Belly flavours were born: Very Cherry, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Root Beer, Grape and Liquorice. Today, Jelly Belly is the worlds number 1 gourmet jelly bean and now made in 50 amazing and tasty flavours. Just another reason to love LA.
You've gotta do the touristy thing when you're in LA and if you're feeling brave you should try the House of Horrors at Universal Studios. It was voted the "Best Year Round Haunted Attraction in America". I never watch horror films and Halloween really scares me but I walked in thinking it would be like the ghost train in Barry's Portrush. Well, if you have a heart problem this is one thing you should avoid. All your worst nightmares come true as you make your way through the dark and windy terror maze. You will come face-to-face with Wolves, Chucky from the film Child's Play and some of the most frightening characters from the scariest horror films of all time. I kept telling myself it wasn't real but every bit of it seemed so realistic and I ran out as soon as I saw the exit sign, it took me 20 minutes to calm down and my heart started to race every time I would talk about it that night. Horrific in every way!!
With June gloom well gone and temperatures getting up to 38oC, I needed to find some breathable clothing and a good bag for the beach. I found a local designer in LA, Alexandra Cassaniti who is known for her hand-crafted pieces from handbags, sunglasses to surfboard covers. She has recently launched a new range, the fabric is amazing and she is planning some summer dresses. Each style run is limited and crafted from all-natural, unbleached cheesecloth (yes, the kind you make cheese with) and flax. The tops and tunics are designed to become more unique with every wear and more durable with every wash - and completely biodegradable when you decide they're done. Each piece comes with a pouch of iron-on patches, ready to mend any fabric tears and increase the pieces lifespan.
I really love the heavyweight canvas beach bags, which were limited edition and handcrafted, with a price tag to suit. The newspapers print is appropriate for my time in LA but unfortunately I had to resist. The website has lots of unique pieces that are very stylish and very useful for a beach holiday.
