The Winter Wedding of Jilly McKay and Jonny Cameron

Jilly McKay and Jonny Cameron were married at the Clandeboye Estate on a snowy December 4th, 2010 in front of 120 guests.

They met while both studying for a Masters in Publishing in Oxford in 2006, but didn’t get to know each other properly until the Summer of 2007, “We stayed to write our dissertations so we met up one afternoon in July and had an amazing time- we ended up spending the next three days solid together! For a month we spent time just getting to know each other and having fun.  We finally had our first kiss at Reading Festival in August where we went for the day, and have been together ever since!"

Jilly had a general idea of what she was looking for in a wedding dress, but didn’t search for long before she found ‘the one’. “I love vintage style clothes and dresses but I'd never thought about wedding dresses before so wasn't sure what I would find. It was only when I tried a few on that I knew I loved lace too. I always knew I didn't want strapless as I don't think I suit that style.

“I didn't try many dresses on as I knew from looking at dresses whether I'd like them on or not which cut out lots of time wasting! The one I ultimately chose was the 3rd or 4th I tried and they were all quite similar in style. I loved my Joanna Hehir dress immediately but I didn't have a 'wow' moment when I put it on- I just knew I felt really comfortable in it and that it was beautiful.”

When it came to dressing her Mother and bridesmaids, Jilly had quite an easy job, “My mum actually bought the first outfit she tried on! It was so lucky- we were just having a really fun day together shopping- not even wedding related shopping!  She happened to ask in Blush Boutique about wedding outfits for her- we both loved the first one she saw and that was that!

“The bridesmaids were slightly harder as the three girls were all in different locations. But they were all easy going and one went shopping and took lots of pictures. We all liked the John Lewis ones and then I bought shrugs and shoes to match online...luckily they all loved them.”

Jilly’s favourite part of her big day was a stolen moment with her new hubby, “I loved the whole day more than I thought I would, there was such a lovely atmosphere and everyone was so happy for us. I think my favourite moment was after the service and photos but before the meal. Jonny and I had become separated and were mingling and chatting to everyone. We happened upon one another and had a nice, quiet moment where we took stock of the situation and it hit us that we were actually married!! After that the day flew in!”

Jilly loved the idea of a Winter wedding, but didn’t think she would get her wish, “Winter is my favourite time of year, I've always loved the build up to Christmas, cosy dark evenings and fairy lights so it was my first instinct, but we only got engaged in June so it seemed impossible- especially since in the six months between the engagement and wedding I started a new job, moved from London back home without Jonny and moved house! But I loved the Clandeboye Estate and when we were told it was free on December, 4th, it just seemed perfect. We were ready to marry and neither of us were too fussy about the details- which is generally what requires years of planning- so we went for it!”

A snowy backdrop was the icing on the cake as far as Jilly was concerned, “The fact it might snow actually never entered my head but I was so happy when it did- after a few worries about guests being able to get to the wedding!  We were so lucky as the venue really suited snow and it was the perfect snowy day- a bright, clear, blue sky with everything covered in snow.”

Jilly’s wedding was definitely her perfect day, “I felt all sorts of emotions throughout the day. Initially I was excited but very nervous but once I got the aisle walk out of the way, I felt relaxed and happy. I preferred being able to stay near Jonny and share the limelight with him as opposed to having all eyes on me! My overwhelming emotion was happiness as it was just so much fun!”
